Prompts

For some writers the muse comes naturally; others have to seize it by the throat and pummel it until it divulges a precious morsel of inspiration.  In an effort to reduce muse muggings we've provided the following prompts to jumpstart your creativity.

  • Write a scene in which your character has to tap dance.
  • What was your character like as a kid?  Write a story about his/her childhood.
  • Go for the Dr. Seuss in you!  Write a story in rhyme.
  • Write a scene that opens with the line "It wasn't my fault!"
  • In a dark and foreboding mood?  Write a scene, or better yet a short story, from your villain's POV.
  • Put your character in a life or death situation involving one of the following: a bronze statue, a rubber chicken, or a bottle of glue.  If you feel really creative incorporate all three.
  • Your character is adrift in a boat/spaceship, all alone and dying of boredom.  With no one else watching, what does your character do to entertain his/herself?
